Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does the semi-formal dress code mean?
A: We have opted for "semi-formal" as a general descriptor for ease of reference, but another way of thinking about this is to ask yourself, would I feel good wearing this to a nice garden party with people I like? Our aim here is to create an immersive overall experience, and as our guests will also be seeing and interacting with one another, we want to encourage outfits that would fit the atmosphere of the event. We are thinking dresses, jumpsuits, stylish separates, slacks, dress shirts, ties optional.
Q: Do we need to dress like we are from a fantasy realm?
A: Fantasy-coded accessories are encouraged, but not required; we are not expecting everyone to have ready access to tabards, doublets, broadswords, aarakocra prosthetics, or diaphanous shawls of woven mist. In terms of the dress code, the more important thing is to be party-ready, rather than fantasy-ready. For instance: yes to sport coats (perhaps you are from a fantasy realm where people wear sport coats), no to "I'm in character as a mercenary who has been journeying on horseback through the wilderness for the past three months, which is why I am covered in road dust and my attire has been worn down to flimsy strips of cloth." Whatever species you are, whatever land you hail from, come ready to attend a party!
Q: Is the murderer different each time the show is performed?
A: Without boring you with our whole PHILOSOPHY OF THE MURDER MYSTERY... No, there is only one "solution" as to who the murderer is, which remains the same across all shows (so no spoilers pretty please). But we've heard early feedback that watching the show after knowing the solution is also fun, because you pick up on a lot of information that slipped you by the first time around! And, of course, all the improvised dialogue and audience interactions will be unique from show to show.
Q: If I come to the show, do I have to participate in the interactive portions?
A: No, you do not have to. Our cast will be roaming the floor and conversing with the guests in between the scripted scenes, but you will never be pushed into becoming part of the show, and you only need to interact with people and things to the degree that you wish to.
Q: I love fantasy, but I'm not really interested in murder mystery shows. Will this still be fun for me?
A: Yes! You'll be able to enjoy mingling in an immersive space and taking in the lore of the world. It'll be very possible for you to approach this primarily as a fantasy-themed performance and dance party, leaving the murder investigation to other guests.
Q: That's a coincidence, because I love murder mystery shows, but I'm not really interested in fantasy. Will this still be fun for me?
A: Also yes! No previous knowledge of fantasy tropes is necessary to contribute to the investigation, and you'll be able to treat this as a murder mystery with just a specific type of set dressing. All the necessary information will be made available to your keen eyes and formidable powers of deduction.
Q: Well, I'm not really familiar with fantasy or murder mystery shows, but I love a good time. Will this still be fun for me?
A: Surprise surprise, another yes! Obscura is filled to the brim with so many different kinds of entertainment--dance, music, jokes, feats of agility and strength-- and you're going to have a wonderful experience taking it all in. Who knows, maybe you'll leave having discovered in yourself a love for fantasy and murder mystery shows!
Q: Why is it an 18+ event? Is it because of the content of the show?
A: No, the age restriction is because alcohol will be served in the event space.
Q: Are there any content warnings?
A: Verbal descriptions of violence only. There will no depictions of violence or gore, rapid changes in lighting, sudden loud noises, nor strong scents.
Q: Is the venue accessible?
A: Yes! But the accessible entrance takes a slightly different route through the building that requires us to be present, so please email us in advance about when you're planning to come, and we will meet you at the door.
Q: Could I hear more about the masked show?
A: Our May 17 show will require guests to wear medical masks or face coverings for the duration of the event, except for when guests are consuming food or drink. We hope that this can help make the show welcoming for those of us who are more conscious of airborne illnesses.
Q: Will there be seating?
A: There will be unassigned seating throughout the performance space. Please drop us a note if you need priority seating, and we can make sure that you have good sightlines during the scenes.
Q: How can I reach out to ask a question not answered on this page?
A: You can email us about anything else you'd like to know!
